We saw this coming: "Mirrorless" is the official name for mirrorless system cameras.

Until now there was no "standard" to define mirrorless system cameras. We had plenty of different definitions like:

- Digital Interchangeable Lens System Cameras (DILSC),
- Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens (EVIL).
- Mirrorless System Cameras (MSC),
- Compact System Cameras (CSC),
- Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM).

But at last the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) decision recognized “Mirrorless” as the official term for interchangeable lens cameras that do not include a mirror mechanism!

Amazing it took seven years to sort this out :)

Toshiba presents new sensor with built-in Olympus alike High res mode.

Toshiba officially presented a new sensor that has a sort of built-in Olympus alike High Resolution mode. Here is the full press text:

Overview
Toshiba has developed a super high quality image processing technology that achieves image quality comparable to that of larger image sensors. This new technology is able to apply a compact image sensor like the ones in smartphones and in-vehicle cameras. Our technology sequentially processes a continuous series of captured images to realize a high image quality previously attainable with only larger image sensors.

Development History
With the miniaturization of semiconductors, the number of pixels in image sensors has been increasing year by year. It is now possible to take an image with higher resolution than ever before. However, the size of image sensors has not changed and this leads to increase of noise in the image because the amount of light received per pixel decreases as the pixel count increases. The long time exposure reduces image noise, but the image quality suffers due to camera shake. Conventionally, electronic image stabilization technology has been used to prevent image quality deterioration. In electronic image stabilization, several copies of the image are overlaid to compensate for the noise and a large amount of parallel memory is required to hold the multiple image copies. As a consequence, the noise reduction effect is limited by the number of image copies that can be kept in memory.

Features and Benefits of Our Technology
Toshiba has developed the super high quality image processing technology, allowing the user to acquire a much higher quality image by significantly reducing noise and preventing camera shake without requiring a large amount of memory. This technology generates a very sharp image with less noise by overlaying many continuously recorded images. By correcting camera shake with our proprietary high-precision motion detection technology, the image is sequentially generated using the memory capacity required for just a single image. This new technology effectively and precisely detects everything from tiny vibrations to large camera shake. Random noise is canceled out by overlaying multiple images, and object edges are kept clear and crisp through the same process. The increase in the number of captured images makes it possible to obtain very high image quality using very little memory for storage, which to date has required a highly sensitive large image sensor. In particular, night scenes suffered from increased image noise. Our technology will enable users to produce extremely clear images at low light conditions.

Fuji is going mediium format in 1-2 years to avoid the Full Frame battle.

For Fuji it makes little sense to compete in the Full Frame market against Canon-Nikon and Sony beasts. And they also understand that the quality difference between APS-C and FF isn't that big. That's why according to Fujirumors they will launch a new Medium Format Mirrorless (system?) camera in 1-2 years from now. They would have no competition, be unique and also lean to their long time medium format history. I think that's a bold move from Fuji!

Students of Ansterdam University get questioned by Sony about a 1300 Euro Mirrrorless camera.

Students from the University of Amsterdam got a Sony poll here: uvacommscience.qualtrics.com. And Sony is describing a hypotethical (or real?) soon to come new 1300 Euro mirrorless camera:

Sony is considering the introduction of a new model of Mirrorless Digital Camera at the price of 1300€.
This new camera will be the first model of an entire new producline Mirrorless Digital Cameras priced at the same point of Sony's Mirrorless Digital Cameras price range, which fluctuates from 400€ to 2300€.
The new model will be named ''PicYou'' and will include models for both amateur and professional photographers. A wide range of lenses and accessories will be available as well. Sony PicYou will provide to the users exactly the same quality features of current Sony's Digital Mirrorless Cameras.

Meyer-Optik-Görlitz launches a new Trioplan F2,8/100mm for Mirrorless System Cameras!

Meyer-Optik-Görlitz Trioplan announced that it will ship the new F2,8/100 mm in December for 1.400 Euro. There will be differen mount versions: M42, Canon EF, Nikon F, Fujifilm XF, Sony E-Mount and Micro Four Thirds.

The lens is said to have a very smooth "soap bubble" bokeh:

Here is the full press text:

The original Trioplan f2.8/100 lens from Meyer-Optik-Görlitz gained a fanatical following of photographers who fell in love with its dream-like soap bubble ‘bokeh’ effect.

The modern remake of the famous lens, currently in prototype, uses experience and modern technology to emulate this stunning effect more authentically than ever before. Great news. But what exactly is a ‘bokeh’ effect, and why is it so well-loved?

Bokeh, usually pronounced ‘BOH-Kay’ but sometimes ‘BOH-ka’, is a photograpic effect that produces an aesthetic blur in the parts of an image which are out of focus. Derived from the Japanese word ‘boke’, meaning ‘blur’ or ‘haze’, bokeh describes the way a particular lens renders out-of-focus points of light. Whereas some lenses unintentionally produce blurring that is distracting and undesirable, others use clever alternate aperture shapes and other engineered adaptations to create ‘good bokeh’ that is pleasantly ghostly and pleasing to the eye.

[Taken with the Trioplan 100mm f2.8 prototype by Raffaele Hortsmann.]

Taken with the Trioplan 100mm f2.8 prototype by Raffaele Hortsmann.

The distinctive circular shape in the Trioplan bokeh derives from the number of aperture blades. The Trioplan f2.8/100 is made of fifteen steel aperture blades whereas modern lenses often have only six plastic blades. This results in a circular aperture rather than the more common hexagon. The more blades, the more circular the aperture is.

The soap-bubble bokeh effect is, strictly speaking, actually a lens aberration – but it is so pleasing to the eye that it has become a desirable effect. Of course, state of the art engineering could simply correct these aberrations which would make the transfer function of the lens look better on paper (in MTF diagrams, magazine tests, etc) but then the soap bubble bokeh effect, so admired by photographers, would be lost.

Bokeh has many creative applications. Most commonly though, photographers specializing in portrait, macro or long-zoom images use good bokeh to their advantage, by enhancing blurred areas created by the shallow depth of field and making the subject stand out starkly against a gossamer background.

Meyer-Optik-Goerlitz has been associated with innovation, precision, durability and quality in the world of photography for nearly 120 years. In 2015 the Trioplan f2.8/100 finally returns, nearly a century after its first appearance in 1916, ensuring that a new fan base will be able to experience a modern take on the classic soap bubble bokeh lens.
